Application and Renewal of ITIN

Are you a Bella residing in the USA and is currently needing a guide as to how to get an ITIN? This post is for you!

I have been chosen to publish an article to guide you guys as to how to get an ITIN. At first, I was hesitant to post this because I feared that majority of my readers (Asian) will not relate to this post. But then I thought, what if there are Bellas who will start working in the USA and needs a guide to get an ITIN!

Shall we start?

What is an ITIN number? An ITIN is an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) of the United States. It is a tax processing number and is a nine-digit number that always begins with the number 9 and has a 7 or 8 in the fourth digit, example 9XX-7X-XXXX.

An IRS ITIN is needed for the purpose of federal tax reporting only and is not intended to serve any other purpose. An ITIN is issued by the IRS to help individuals comply with the US tax laws, and to provide a means to efficiently process and account for tax returns and payments for individuals who do not qualify for a Social Security Number (SSN). An ITIN does not authorize an individual to work in the US and it does not provide eligibility for social security benefits to the ITIN holder, nor qualify the individual for earned income tax credit purposes.

If an individual does not have an SSN and is not eligible to obtain an SSN, but there is a need to furnish a federal tax identification number or file a federal income tax return, the individual must apply for an ITIN. Application for ITIN can be done at any of the IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centres or use the services provided by the IRS authorized Acceptance Agent. The application Form W-7, tax return, and proof of identity and a foreign status document can also be sent directly to the Internal Revenue Service center.

The application should be done as soon as the individual is ready to file his or her federal income tax return since it has to be attached with the application. The application can be done at any time during the year but if the current year tax return is not submitted before the tax return’s due date, the individual will have to pay an interest and/or could be penalized.
Expired ITIN renewal can be done by:

- Completing and mailing the Form W-7, proof of identity and foreign status documents directly to the Internal Revenue Service and your application will be processed within 60 days
- Appearing in person using the services of an IRS authorized Certified Acceptance Agent
- Making an appointment at any of the designated IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centre.

After your application has been processed, the IRS will issue the ITIN assignment notice through the mail. Any ITIN will remain in effect as long as a taxpayer continues to file U.S. tax returns.

Any queries? You may comment them down! Will try my best to help!
